Bike Fixed (Hopefully)

30/04/2010

I had a really uneventful day today. Much like yesterday I spent most of the day at the bike shop, talking to Roger, the owner. He spent most of the day working on my bike, and I think he has done a great job on it – he has completely rebuilt my destroyed rear wheel with stronger spokes and reinforced my rear rack. The rack now looks really sturdy, so hopefully that will hold up at least until I get to Colorado.

I finally got my bike back at about 15.30 and decided to take it for a spin to make sure it won’t fall apart on me as soon as a leave town. I rode out of Pittsburg on the 126, the same road that I was driven in on, and headed east until I came across the ‘Welcome to Kansas’ sign that I missed on the way in. So I now have the manditory state boarder photo! The bike ran really well – about as smoothly as it has done since I was new – and didn’t fall apart, so I am feeling positve about tomorrow.

I don’t mind spending the time off just as long as I get my bike working again, but it’s still a bit disheartening not to have made any progress at all over the last couple of days. I should be able to make good time across Kansas as long as the wind and the weather are on my side – yesterday the wind was ridiculously strong, and there were thunder storms this morning, with tonrnados a real possibility! I think it must be true what they say about the weather in Kansas: ‘if you don’t like the weather wait 5 minutes and it’ll change’.

Although I don’t have too far to go tomorrow I’m going to get off to an early start, as apparently the wind tends to pick up in the afternoons.

  1. Glad you managed to get the ‘Welcome to Kansas’ sign, it’s a great one for the album. Good luck with your cycling today, try not to get whisked away to the land of Oz! Thinking of you constantly, ly mum

  2. Just follow the yellow brick road. Glad the bike is back may you now have trouble free riding to west coast. You are still doing brilliantly. Lots of love and prayers uncle Guy
