INTO THE FURNACE
We were up before dawn today and on the road for sunrise. A quick getaway was aided by our own personal toilet block – a great bonus feature of our favourite camp site so far.
Todays ride was a mad dash to Merida before midday, when the temperature gets unbearable. It was a short day at around 50 miles, over easy terrain, but progress was stalled by another two broken spokes on my rear wheel. We reached Merida by 11, and managed to get my wheel mended … again. As an added measure we found a post office, and I sent all my winter clothes and obsolete maps home so hopefully, 6kg lighter, I should make it to the finish.
The rest of the day was spent by the pool, and in the campsite bar trying to keep cool. As I write this (at 21.30 it’s still 25 degrees so I’m out under the stars again, that having been a prudent measure last night.
Hi darling,
Good to speak to you tonight, and to hear you in such good spirits. I have just looked at the map, and can’t believe how well you are doing despite all the broken spokes. Sounds like a good plan to send your cold weather kit home, you certainly wont be needing it. Have booked your flights home, but still need the expiry dates on your passports.
Can’t wait to see you next week. Keep drinking plenty of water! Love you Mum xxx
Hi Sammy
Hope your bike is now ok – sounds really really hot out there and it’s good that you get going at dawn now to beat the heat. Was looking at Merida on the map – you’re making great progress!
I note that your flights have been booked – would you let me know the day? As it’s your birthday tomorrow I would love to be able to wish you a Happy Birthday on the phone – do you think that would be possible?! Let me know by text if it is. Keep putting the sunblock on!
Love Mumx
